Harvard and the Holocaust


Prominent Americans had significant amount of influence in the implementation and outcome of Hitler's eugenic policies. Many of these were the product of Ivy League education, and in turn, Hitler's formidable propaganda machine was quite happy to have the public approval of America's finest scientists, doctors, and journalists. Harvard professors and graduates were by far the most influential. Prominent Harvard graduates sat as Judges in Hitler's eugenic courts. Harvard graduates and lecturers were part of the administration at the Buchenwald concentration camp. Prominent Harvard professors and students formed the immigration restriction lobby that was instrumental in keeping Jewish refugees from reaching U.S. shores. Prestigious Harvard alumni used their influence to help whitewash the Third Reich's racial policies, and by extension to keep the murders a contested "rumor" until the end of the war. - Partially derived from "From a 'Race of Masters' to a 'Master Race': 1948 to 1848"

A Keen Understanding of Hitler's Policies: Surveying the American Zeitgeist


The seeds of Holocaust denial take root and prosper with misinformation. Clarity and transparency are imperative, as they leave no room for denial theories that would deprive the victims justice. As discussed my first book, "From a 'Race of Masters' to a 'Master Race': 1948 to 1848", the amount of collaboration by American and British scientists in Germany's eugenic program has been drastically underreported, if not intentionally omitted from the historical record. The sizeable amount of documents evidencing the collaboration makes it unlikely that this aspect of WWII history was innocently forgotten or overlooked. The question remained as to what information was available to the general public. I decided to conduct a study of prominent newspapers of the era. I wanted to construct a profile of the American zeitgeist during the eugenics era between WWI and WWII. Two newspapers were selected: The New York Times, and the Chicago Tribune, and key magazines such as TIME and LIFE were surveyed. A stack of articles resulted, and the trends that emerged surprised me. Research resulting from the writing of "H.H. LAUGHLIN: American Scientist. American Progressive. Nazi Collaborator."

ADOLF HITLER: From Common Bigotry to Scientific Racism to Genocide


Included is a chapters from Vol. 1 of The Eugenics Anthology book series: “From a ‘Race of Masters’ to a ‘Master Race’: 1948 to 1848.” This chapter is separated out because it covers a specific issue about Adolf Hitler’s evolution from common bigot to genocidal maniac. It is a transformation that is apparent in the timeline of Hitler’s speeches. To the knowledge of this author, no one else has taken note of the discernable change in rhetoric in Hitler’s speeches. Adolf Hitler went from common bigot equipped with the musings of a pedestrian crank, to surfacing from his stint in jail as a genocidal maniac equipped with the scientific racism of Ivy League biologists. This is a discernible and all-important change in Hitler’s type of racialism. A survey of Hitler’s pre-Landsberg speeches and his post-Landsberg speeches demonstrate this shift in Hitler’s rhetoric. This divergence and evolution can only be explained with Hitler’s introduction to medical and scientific knowledge. J.F. Lehmann, Hitler’s publisher, brought him books on the International eugenics movement as he was writing “Mein Kampf” while imprisoned in Landsberg. The result of this “education” was the transformation of the man that was nothing more than a pedestrian crank spewing worn-out and commonplace grievances against the Jewish population. The Hitler that emerged from Landsberg was equipped with the much more dangerous “racialist” repertoire of Ivy League biologists and Oxford economists.

Prof. Garland E. Allen's Foreword to the book, "H.H. LAUGHLIN: American Scientist. American Progressive. Nazi Collaborator."


One of the most rewarding aspects of the rewrite and reboot of “The Eugenics Anthology” was working with now-retired Professor Garland E. Allen. Anyone that has spent any amount of time researching eugenics and scientific racism knows that Professor Allen is one of the most often cited authorities on the subject. Professor Allen led the move to research the American side of the International eugenics movement and was rummaging through the Laughlin Papers at Truman University’s Special Collections before they were even organized into boxes. Professor Allen was a pioneer, while others in academia had a myopic focus on the German side of the equation. Needless to say, benefiting from Professor Allen’s guidance through the rewrite of “H.H. Laughlin” was a milestone in itself; one of those occasions where the journey was a reward in itself. It is thus that I am proud to share the Foreword Professor Allen wrote for “H.H. THE SCOPES MONKEY TRIAL: Eugenics, White Supremacy, & Utopian Socialism


The Scopes “Monkey Trials” was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The beneficiary of this stunt was the international eugenics movement. Some of the influential figures behind the impetus remain well known. What is not common knowledge is their ties to the eugenics lobby, and, by extension, the explicitly white supremacist views woven into the passages of the book at the center of the controversy. More to the point, it is incredible that this aspect of this famous trial has not been delved into much. Consider the implications. Several generations of America’s youth were taught the concepts Nazi Germany’s Hitler Youth were schooled in.

The Iconography of The Eugenics Anthology


Writing and creating a multi-volume book series is much like pulling together a puzzle, where the pieces are at first scattered and their relationships are yet to coalesce. The creation of visual themes for the book covers and typography helps assemble an aesthetic continuity from one volume to the next as this process necessitates the creation of pattern and visual rhetoric. The thought process of pulling all disparate pieces together is non-linear, especially if you were trained as a designer. Rationalizing the patterns and relationships of the disparate pieces of text becomes very much like finding like colors in puzzle pieces scattered on a tabletop. Organizing these patterns into a coherent presentation can inform the otherwise linear nature of academic writing.

A historical view that Charles Darwin was on par on the cause of freeing the slaves as President Lincoln is in vogue as of late. This version of history unjustly robs Lincoln in order to canonize Darwin. The historical facts simply do not support the allegation that Charles Darwin had any positive effects on the cause of abolition. To the contrary, Charles Darwin represents a distinct step backwards from the formidable record of activism that his grandparents Erasmus Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood represent.
